He was physically suited for his job - big, strong, a quick thinker, and had a natural talent for getting the work done. Archie was walking through the as-yet uncut forest on a break when he heard unnatural screaming and sounds of combat just over the next hill. He quickly ran to investigate. The sight that came to his eyes was beyond belief: the great hulking four armed green brute known as Grond was swinging a giant cedar like a baseball bat. The target of the green muscleman's swing was a small half fox/half human with feminine features. The creature's hair was also green. Archie, always ready to watch a good fight, hid behind a tree and watched the battle. The brute screamed "Grond crush you fox lady!" and finally connected with his nimble opponent. The fox woman flew backwards with incredible force, smashing into the tree that Archie was hiding behind. Giving in to his curiosity, he moved around to check on the woman. Amazingly, she was not a bloody pulp, but was definately in bad shape. Checking over his shoulder on the approach of Grond, Archie tried to pick up the injured woman. She screamed in pain at his touch. "Don't! You mustn't take it! I... need... it..." Before his eyes the woman faded into nothingness. Archie felt strange. He looked down at his arms, and felt them pulsing with power. He felt like he could do anything. Then the world spun. Picking himself off the ground, Archie realized that Grond had hit him from behind, but he wasn't dead - shaken, sure, but he had survived! He looked back at Grond - way back, through broken trees and foilage. He sure had been hit hard! Though he knew he now had powers, he wasn't sure he wanted to tangle with the approaching monstrosity. Taking the better part of valour, Sledge ran back through the woods... In the years to come, Archie learned more and more about his new powers. He realized that he technically wasn't as "strong" as the other musclemen, but could lift enourmous amounts. A theoretical physicist filled him in on a possible reason why (see powers). Archie started out as a superhero, carrying two ordinary sledgehammers and naming himself after his weapons of choice. The problem was, he liked wrecking things. He enjoyed the combat too much. He loved to topple a building on top of a villain, and battle him nose to nose, every time coming out a winner. The damage he caused in his many battles forced him into court on more than one occasion, proving to be too much for his now enormous ego. Sledge flew into a rage, destroying the entire court building, and escaping. Overwhelmed by what he saw as incredible hypocrisy in the world, he gathered together like-minded individuals, named themselves B.R.U.T.E. FORCE (B.R.U.T.E. being an acronym for Big Ruthless Ugly Tyrants of Evil) and started a rampage of destruction for the sheer joy of it. In a very short time, B.R.U.T.E. FORCE became a very dangerous team. Sledge learned how to manipulate his underlings to his full advantage, and studied diligently on tactics. The only thing holding B.R.U.T.E. FORCE back was the lack of imagination in crimes. Sledge did not seek to rule the world, just to get as much attention as he could, while at the same time making enough money for all of B.R.U.T.E. FORCE to live comfortably. A super-powered response team code named "Snapfire" (lead by Redeye Fred) was set up in Vancouver, B.C. to deal with this new threat - much to the joy of Sledgehammer, who loved a good fight. Eventually though, B.R.U.T.E. FORCE was defeated, with Sledgehammer barely escaping with his life. He travelled around the world, hiring himself out to whoever would pay him enough, but the trials of being on the run have worn away at his anger. He is starting to discover philosophy, and moral rights and wrongs, as opposed to "fun" and "not fun". This is a time of maturation for the man known as Sledgehammer. PERSONALITY PROFILE Sledgehammer started off as a superhero because he wanted attention, not because he wanted to change the world. His childlike "look at me" attitude was what caused him to go bad - he kept getting bad press, which ruined his reputation as a hero, so he turned villain. His career as a villain never amounted to more than a bunch of successful bank raids, and a lot of property damage. Since the breakup (read: destruction) of B.R.U.T.E. FORCE, Sledge has started to grow out of this attitude. He is slowly discovering the difference between right and wrong, though not always willingly. He is not stupid, merely amoral and selfish. The bright lights of fame (and infamy) do not shine so bright for him anymore, and he is currently seeking answers to the questions that now face him. He is currently reading up on different philosophies - Descartes, Plato, and especially Neitzche. A few public libraries have been mysteriously broken into in the last year, the only losses being large holes in the wall, and a few books stolen. More often than not, money worth more than twice the value of damaged and stolen goods has been left behind. Perhaps there is hope after all. POWERS Somehow, Archie Fraser partially acquired Grond's strength via Meldrin (the woman in the woods) and a strange offshoot of her dimensional powers. Because of this, any energy hitting his body over a certain level is automatically shunted off to a pocket dimension. This makes Sledge highly resistant to most any form of physical or energy damage, and also allows him to lift immense amounts of weight without being pushed down into the ground. In other words, if Sledge stood on a weigh scale he would weigh 250 lbs., regardless of how much extra mass he was holding. A drawback of his 'dimensional shunt' ability is that he does not do as much punch damage as another brick (of the same lifting capacity) would do. Sledge has taken direct advantage of his lifting ability to offset it's drawback, always carrying around his huge hammer - the head of which is bigger than he is! This hammer weighs in at 40 tons, and does immense damage to anything it hits. Sledge's biggest disadvantage in combat is his lack of movement powers. It is VERY easy to run away from him (unless he throws his hammer!) APPEARANCE Sledge is a large (6' 5"), heavily muscled caucasian male. He has chiseled features, and his only truly distinctive feature (besides his size) is his hair: bright green, cropped short and military. CAMPAIGN USE Sledge can be used as a villain capable of taking on groups with little help, or a villain on the run who isn't quite so evil anymore. (remove Casual Killer disad) If the group is willing, he may even join them to help defeat a greater villain (while keeping them on their toes watching him.) This is especially valid if the player's need a strong arm to help them. Under no circumstances will Sledgehammer join the group unless he can lead it (highly unlikely, as well as disruptive to the campaign.)
