King, "Hamlet"

King Hamlet appeared after the original King, Jeremiah Yeats, was revealed to be a spy. He is a distinguished looking man in his early fourties with black hair starting to silver. Quiet and impressive, it has been difficult for him to assimilate the organization in such a limited time. It is commonly held that Hamlet was one of the players but took a demotion to become the visible head of the organization. Rather predicatbly, Hamlet enjoys reading and theater, preferring Shakespeare. He is a competent chess player but by no means a master. He feels very responsible for his men and women. Don't call him "Hammy" if you expect him to answer.

Bishop 6, Clytemnestra Jones - "The Ice Queen"

One of the most talked about people in the Chessmen organization, Bishop Six is a statuesque blonde whose hair is almost white. Her cold eyes are blue, and she seldom betrays emotion of any kind. Her demeanor, and the several rebuffs that she has given possible romancers has earned her nickname. She is occasionally called "Cly" behind her back, no one dares say it to her face. She is a master in the fields of political science, geo-politics, international terrorism, history and journalism. Her area of special concentration is RAVEN operations and organization, that being one of the most important areas of concern to Chessmen as a whole. Since Chessmen's victory against the Raven organization Cly has been "between assignments", taken off of her old project but not assigned to a new one. She is currently acting as an assistant to Hamlet, the current King.

Bishop 11, Douglas Kent

The man in charge of UNTIL Operation and Organization information is an ex-member of that agency. Douglas Kent served in the United States Marine Corps for fifteen years, nine of which were spent in UNTIL-assigned service. He achieved a staff-seargent's eye view of the organization during that time, and since his recruitment by Chessmen he has expanded that to include every facet of UNTIL. Kent is a black man in his early forties. He smokes a cigar compulsively. He has a brusque and professional manner and respects UNTIL agents and organizers at every level. He is, however, prejudiced against the red-tape bureaucrats that bind the international agency.

Bishop 17, Leon Crowe

All Knight technical training is supervised by Leon Crowe. A tall, imposing computer-like genius, Crowe is a merciless instructor. Personality conflicts between him and his students are extremely common, and often come to blows. Crowe, however, actually began in Chessmen as a Knight, and is a fully qualified Knight of the Crown. His skill at unarmed combat is formidable and more than one knight has ended up flat on his back after an unsuccessful argument. His technical credentials are superior, focusing on field application of "rather overblown laboratory skills." Crowe personally tests all new weapons and equipment before they are approved for final Knight use.

Bishop 19, Jennifer Styles

Relatively new to the organization, Miss Styles is a raven-haired beauty who hides as much as possible behind a lab coat and glasses. Styles is a brilliant physicist and engineer in the area of energy weaponry and miniaturization, her talents at organization are equally impressive. She has quickly adapted to her position and is proud of her rank and responsibilities. Jennifer is probably in her early thirties, and has an absolutely photographic memory in addition to her other talents as a scientist.

Bishop 24, Arthur Mngalla

An Egyptian Native, Mngalla served as Egypt's ambassador to Libya for several years before taking his position in Chessmen. He is a middle-aged black man who is in good physical condition. With the current tensions in the Middle East, Arthur's responsibilities have increased tenfold. Fortunately he is the kind of man who works better than usual while under pressure. Arthur spends much of his time at the Chessmen base in Cairo.

Bishop 25, "Smith"

Appearing about three years ago as an assistant to the then-Queen Rosa Perez, Smith has always been a man of mystery. No information has been made available about his past, and he admits to having his face entirely reconstructed. His usefulness to the organization, however, is not in question. He is a master of dozens of martial art forms including all of the most common types: Karate, Kung Fu, Jiu-Jutsu, Commando Training, Aikido, Boxing, etc. He is currently serving the duties normally performed by the Queen. He is quiet and introverted but obviously cares much about the Knights and is not satisfied until their training is absolutely the best possible. He stands about five foot ten and has pale blonde hair and ice blue eyes.

Bishop 29, Anthony "Teddy" Bear

Teddy was Cly's assistant on the Raven organization until the recent victory against that super agency. Teddy was then placed in charge of the cleanup operation and further monitoring of the Raven problem for the indefinite future. Teddy is a large and friendly guy who seems like he should be a used car salesman. But Cly chose him personally to be her assistant, and his good humor should not be misinterpreted. Bear is a graduate of the University of Chicago and holds a PhD in history.

Rook 1, Heather Watson

Nothing destroys the stereotypical image of the Rook so much as this red-haired and energetic young woman. Only in her mid-twenties, she is the youngest Rook in the organization and only recently recruited. She is an extremely talented organizer and administrator with a fanatical devotion to her job, however, and there have been few questions of her ability. She is noted for occasional adjustments to the standard uniform, most notably studded leather bracelets and leather boots. Her office is always filled with rock music. She is close friends with Bishop Jennifer Styles.

Rook 71, Sigmund Jorgenson

A large and imposing man who takes his job very seriously, Sigmund was recently moved to New York to become Heather's new assistant. He does not associate much with the other agents in the base, and is best known for his fascination with Wagner. He is a tall and impressive Nordic blonde with glasses.

King's Knight 7 - Mary Hallingsworth

Five years ago Mary was captured and interrogated by RAVEN personnel, and Chessmen has been paying the price ever since. She is driven by guilt and a sense of failure which still has not gone away, though she has fooled many psychiatrists into safety. Hallingsworth is a standard King's Knight. Her degree is in electronic engineering and her language is Russian. Replace the Sliver Gun with the Whip and add Ultraviolet Vision (Total Equipment 75; 16 Brownie Points).

King's Knight 12 - Christopher Powell

A brilliant young man with a definite talent for the technical, Powell is currently Leon Crowe's protege and best student. Powell is one of the most competent King's Knights but is still somewhat inexperienced. He is thin and almost six feet tall, and a skilled wrestler. Replace the Martial Arts Maneuvers with a wrestling package (Hold, Choke, Escape and Take Down). Add the skills Weaponsmith and Spinneret Operation and the Talent of Eidetic Memory. Add two skill levels for use with Weaponsmith, Electronics, and Mechanics. Increase INT to 23. His degree is in mechanical engineering and he speaks Japanese. Remove the Sliver Gun and the Fear Gas. Replace these with Spinnerets and an Autopepper.

Knight of the Crown 4 - Lin Shinkoji

Lin is a real ninja, or was before her clan (the Shinkoji) were massacred by the Shishikura clan in a surprise attack that involved a traitor Shinkoji. Lin revenged herself against the head of the Shishinkura clan, but many ninja of that particular clan remain. Lin is a very talented Knight with an envied mission success record. She is usually assigned to infiltrations and the occasional covert assassination. All of the allegiance she previously payed to her clan she now pays to Chessmen and Hamlet in particular. Lin is an amazingly skilled woman and has her own character sheet.

Queen's Knight 3 - Catherine "Cat" Mynell

One of the first Knights recruited into the organization in its inception ten years ago, Catherine is the "old hand" in the Queen's Knights. She is a brilliant savateur with superhuman reflexes. On missions she uses the Blade Launcher and her own blinding speed. Catherine was invited to join Chessmen after her body rejected the Cyberline drugs she recieved while applying for PRIMUS membership. Since that time she has come to enjoy Chessmen's more liberal agent policies. She is a French national with curly brown hair, a gorgeous atheltic build, and a powerful accent. Her martial art maneuvers are Savate, delete the Dodge and add a Side Kick, Direct, and Footsweep. Also add +2 levels with Savate and the art is useable with Blades. Increase her DEX to 23 and her COM to 18. Delete the Lance and Holdout Pistol from her Equipment List and add Combat Drugs, an Autopepper, and +2 Hearing Perception. (Total Equipment 80, 32 Brownie Points).

Queen's Knight 6, "Jolly" Roger Jones

A quiet and unassuming man, Jones is another of the oldest and most respected of the Knights. He is a powerful Karate fighter, and is extremely effective despite a lack of the usual "flash" of Chessmen Knights. His nickname is derived from his constant morose attitudes. Jones has seldom been known to smile, and never laugh. Further, Jones has a reputation for bad luck; many of his missions have ended in failure for no discernible reason. He is a typical Queen's Knight with the added skills of Demolitions and Weaponsmith. His Martial Arts are Karate; delete the Choke maneuver and add a Side Kick and Knifehand Strike along with two extra damage classes.

Queen's Knight 12, Adam Mohammed Moshet Toulun - "The Fist of Allah"

Toulun was a risky choice for Knight recruiters, but they couldn't afford to let that much talent slip through their fingers. The Fist of Allah was one of the most sought-after mercenaries in the middle east, but became so hunted that he was forced to retire into the ranks of Chessmen. Now he is assigned the least subtle and most difficult of the combat missions, and specializes in assassinations. He is a master marksman and is intimately familiar with all aspects of the Arabian culture in addition to being a deadly hand to hand fighter. Add High Society skill (Arabian), Streetwise and Interrogation. Add +2 levels with Rifles and two damage classes with his martial arts. For Equipment, delete all listed equipment and replace with the Reinforced Armor, Exoskeleton, Sniper Rifle with extra clip and Chain Knuckles. (Total equipment 75; 16 Brownie Points).

Pawn 116, Angelique "Angel" Rigadliotto

One of the Chessmen's most capable helicopter pilots, Angelique is famous for her Knight pull-outs. The design of the Grandmaster incorporated several design points that she insisted upon. Rigadliotto is a slender and quite beautiful woman with chocolate-and-milk skin. She hails from New Orleans but of course her heritage is Italian. She is rumored to be an excellent cook. Angel personally handled final flight tests of the cloak-equipped Bobby Fisher, and she considers it "her boat". (Total Equipment 40; 16 Brownie Points).

Pawn 190, Christine Debournay

Most famous for her infiltration of the Raven High Command, Christine is a dark-haired beauty with a reputation for quick thinking and a savvy appreciation of any tactical situation. She is a consummate spy and actress who has impressive knowledge of current paranormals.

Addendum: Christine was recently killed on a routine surveillance mission by a DEMON sponsored assassin by the name of Stigmata. She was crucified and speared through the side.

Pawn 212, Graham Nelson Lord

Graham is one of the computer hackers in King's Square. Responsible for analyzing and intepreting data stolen from enemy agencies he is "in the know" on several projects that only Bishops and up are allowed full clearance on. He takes his job very seriously. Graham is a very intense young man with glasses, brown curly hair and a mustache.

Pawn 316, Timothy Rand

Tim is one of the technicians and assemblers in the New York R&D labs. He is a welder and a spare time engineer. He has sandy hair and an excellent mustache. Quiet and unassuming, he is nonetheless well liked by the other pawns.

These personnel backgrounds are almost exclusively the work of Jason Vester. The game has since moved on, but I have included them to add color to the game.
