Law School Outlines

Disclaimer: You should write your own outlines. If you use my outlines to study from, it is at your own peril, and I am not responsible for any grades you receive, good or bad. I've uploaded these more so that people can see how I've done them, and to see that they differ from class to class. A number of my statutory classes have permitted me to take the statutes, marked up, into the exam. When that was the case, I didn't include as much of the statute in the outline.

A number of classes (Torts II, Telecom Seminar, Legal History, Legal Writing, Legal History Seminar) had paper requirements, rather than exams, and are therefore not included. I have not included my Crim. Pro. outline or my Professional Responsibilty outlines, because in those classes I received a C+ (this may or may not have anything to do with the outline, but still, I wouldn't feel warm and fuzzy about it). The Disability outline was divvied up with a friend, and only has my portion. I have not included Wills & Trusts or Property Transactions (although I received a B and an A, respectively) because I only have half outlines, and otherwise didn't work from my own. (I don't recommend this, but sometimes you make these calls when time runs short and you have five exams.)

Some of these are definitely better than others. Some of the short outlines I like much better than the longer ones. Hopefully, if you look at these files, you'll figure out what to do - and what not to do. But if nothing else, you'll know what worked for one person.

My process is to start outlining about a month before exams. I feel starting earlier means I may not have the big picture, and starting later leaves me pressed for time.

I outline in broad strokes, working from my class notes, and mark where I need more information. Once I have the rough outline completed, I spend time filling in the blanks, looking up cases and rereading as needed in the books. Afterwards, I'll print the outline out, and study from it; frequently as I'm studying I note new holes in the material and continue to research. My final outlines tend to be heavily marked up by hand, and unfortunately, that doesn't show through in these files.
